1. Why are you raising money for the American Diabetes Association (ADA)?

You can read the long version, but the short version is that I’m doing it in memory of my father who died in 2011 due to complications from diabetes. Plus it’s horrifying to me that:

  • Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and Breast Cancer combined.
  • Every 20 seconds someone new is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • 1 in 3 of our children will develop diabetes in their lifetime if current trends continue.

2. Do you have diabetes?

No I don’t, but there is a history of it in my family. That’s why I’m trying to exercise and eat better, two simple things that can help lower your risk for both type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

3. Why 1,000 miles?

1,000 seemed like a good place to start. It’s more than I’ve ever run, but it averages out to just over 19.24 miles/week. I think that’s doable, even with the complications that tend to get in the way of regular runs.

4. Ok, why just 1,000 miles? My friend/sister/brother/aunt/uncle/neighbor ran way more than that last year.

First, your friend/sister/brother/aunt/uncle/neighbor/and anybody else that can run that far is freakin’ awesome! And you can tell them I said so.

Second, I tried for 1,000 miles last year and ended up missing it due to injuries. This year I’m hoping that I can stay healthy and put those miles to work for the ADA.

5. What are you doing with the money?

All donations are being made directly to the ADA through my fundraising page, so the question really should be “what is the ADA going to do with the money?”

6. How are you going to track your mileage?

All outdoor runs will be tracked using iSmoothRun or RunKeeper on my phone. When I’m not able to run outside, I’ll track my time using the apps, but adjust the distance to match the treadmill display.

After I complete a run, the distance will be automatically uploaded to RunKeeper website. If you want the most recent 2015 total, visit my RunKeeper Profile and subtract 1,554 from my miles to remove everything from previous years.

I’ll also be updating the total on the homepage as soon as I can.

7. What can I do to help?

Donations and pledges are great. Also, please share this story with your friends and family.

8. Can I still sponsor you even though you’ve already started?

Of course! However, since all the calculations are based on my mileage goal, please use 1,000 to figure out your per-mile pledge. The per-mile amount will be less, but you should be able to get close to your desired total amount.

9. Can I make a per-mile pledge for some of the 1,000 miles, but not all?

Unfortunately, no. However, you can reduce your per-mile pledge to get close to your desired total. If this doesn’t work for you, please consider making a one-time donation.

10. What do I do if I have a question that’s not answered here?

Shoot me an email and I’ll get back to you ASAP.
